The visually attractive state of Manipur in north-eastern India merged today, seemly on 21st September 1949, with the newly formed Indian Union.

The accession of Manipur State is a tale and phase of Indian history which played a key role in strengthening the roots of Indian administration in the coming decades. Manipur’s background is a combination of phenomenal dance between its history and geography. These both aspects of Manipur complemented each other so gracefully that it gave us a Manipur which we witness today. Manipur has seen many invasions; the war with the British's ended the king’s rule in this state. Like other independent states of India, Manipur came under British threshold in 1891.

The end of 19th century broke the shackles of slavery and India welcomed the dawn of liberty. This aspect of this change came to Manipur when Maharaja Bodhchandra Singh set up a committee to draft a constitution for a new government in Manipur (1947). Simultaneously India was trying to merger the Princely states under the leadership of India’s first Home Minister Sardar Vallabhai Patel. According to this plan, a negotiation was held between Manipur and India in 1949 which resulted in signing the instrument of accession.

Interesting Fact: Manipur was Union Territory of India till 1962 but it received full statehood within India in 1972.
